The safety of people in traffic control requires preplanning and the right equipment. New mandatory OHS regulations require preplanning to involve all stakeholders including but not limited to “the owner of the roadway, the prime contractor and any subcontracts that are involved in the traffic control and the traffic control personnel. Complete a risk assessment in addition to a traffic plan.
OHS 18.3.3 now requires eliminating the risk of worker exposure to traffic. What does this mean? Traffic control providers must utilize Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFAD) to reduce the number of people standing on the road. The use of AFAD’s allow the worker to stand completely off the roadway in a safe location while operating the equipment. Wherever an AFAD must be used requires inclusion in the Risk Assessment and Traffic Control Plan
